The Nitty Gritty, is published on a monthly basis with the primary goal of keeping village residents informed about local events, council news, and other happenings in and around Portage. If you have any information that you would like to have included, please send and/or email it to the following address:
Anne Deutschman
911 N Wintergarden Rd
Bowling Green, OH 43402
The target publish date for each issue is the first Saturday following the first Monday of the month. This allows news from the first village council meeting to be included and distributed on a timely basis.
The Portage Lions Club participates in the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) Adopt-A-Highway program, and has adopted the two-mile section of State Route 25 from the south side of Bowling Green through the village of Portage.
Several times a year our members pick up trash along the route to help keep our community clean and litter free.
The Portage Lions Club conducts vision screenings for area pre-schools free of charge.
Recycling has returned to the Village of Portage. Thanks to the Wood County Solid Waste Management District we now have a permanent 24 hour drop site in the parking lot behind the Village Hall.
Unlike the monthly recycling trailer that was only open three hours on a Saturday morning, the new site is open 24 hours a day, 7-days a week, 365 days a year. Besides the convenience of having anytime drop-off, now more items are recyclable and they no longer need to be sorted. Two bins are available and you may put your recyclables in either bin.
Lions Recycle for Sight
The Portage Lions Club collects used eyeglasses as part of the global mission of Lions Clubs International to combat blindness. In just about any home, you can find a pair of eyeglasses that are no longer being used. That same pair of eyeglasses can change another person's life.
Throughout the year, our club collects used eyeglasses and delivers them to VOSH in Pandora, Ohio. The eyeglasses are cleaned, sorted by size and prescription strength, and packaged for use on mission trips around the world.
